The Power of Humor

Any public speaker knows that a good one-liner, when he first stands up to speak can help him relate to a new audience. It warms both the speaker to his audience, and the audience to the speaker. It breaks cold ice of the air's tension. Charles Spurgeon said that humor in a sermon is like a flash of lightning on a dark night. It has the ability to awaken a congregation. It enlightens the eyes, so that the truths of the Gospel can be thundered home. The exciting thing is that this power of humor can be translated from pulpit preaching to personal witnessing. Humor can be used to break the ice when relating to a complete stranger.

Perhaps you are shaking your head and saying, "But I don't have the gift of humor." The good news is that you don't need it. For years I have used a few photos in my wallet that are by far the greatest witnessing tool I have. I use them in supermarket lines, at airports when giving I.D., or whenever I want someone to warm to me for the sake of the gospel. They have been so effective that myself and my associate have been upgraded to First Class, when they were shown to weary flight attendants who greatly appreciated the refreshment of humor. If you have a problem with fear when it comes to sharing your faith (and who hasn't), this will really help you. A picture is worth a thousand words.

There are many computer programs that can create these pictures. Make your own, then watch in amazement as people warm to you, giving you access for the gospel of salvation. If you'd like to stretch your head, the program is Adobe Photoshop... simply go to filter... distort... pinch.
